SALEM, MA – Paying tribute to the official city tagline “Still Making History,” Salem has yet another achievement to boast about as the Hawthorne Hotel received the prestigious Historic Hotels of America Award of Excellence and was voted as the 2015 U.S. Best City Center Historic Hotel. Nominees for the award included exceptional hotels such as the Brown Hotel in Kentucky, The Lord Baltimore Hotel in Maryland, the Omni Parker House in Boston, the Portland Regency Hotel & Spa in Maine, and the New York Plaza Hotel.
The Awards of Excellence are presented to historic hotels demonstrating the highest contribution to furthering the celebration of history and demonstrating leadership and innovation. A panel of experts judged and weighed the nominees in each category in order to determine a winner. Each year, these awards honor, encourage, and recognize the most exemplary historic hotels, hoteliers, and leadership practices.
Hawthorne Hotel General Manager, Patrick Cornelissen, accepted the award from Larry Horwitz, Executive Director of Historic Hotels of America, during a gala event that took place at the West Baden Springs Resort in Indiana, before an audience of more than 200 owners, senior management, invited media, industry leaders, and representatives from the finest historic hotels across America. Cornelissen dedicated the award to the 150 Hawthorne employees and noted that the hotel was also one of the nominees in the Best Historic Hotel (75-200 rooms) category.

“While we often think of city hotels to be in places such as New York, Boston, Chicago or San Francisco, it shows that Salem stands its own, and that we can be proud of our joint partnership that brings visitors to our region, the city and the hotel,” explains Cornelissen. “I am equally proud to be part of a hotel that is deeply interwoven into the fabric of Salem and the many distinct allures we have to offer—from the Salem Witch Museum to the House of Seven Gables and the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem is a world-class city that blends culture and heritage into a place worth visiting any time of year.”
The Historic Hotels of America Award is the culmination of an outstanding year for the hotel, as the Hawthorne Hotel entered the 2015 TripAdvisor Awards of Excellence Hall of Fame, received Awards of Excellence for the Tavern and Nat’s restaurants, and was voted the 2015 Readers’ Choice Award during the Best of the North Shore annual BONS event. The hotel also honored its 90th anniversary with a fabulous celebratory bash and a commemorative flag-raising ceremony on the rooftop of the hotel.
The Hawthorne Hotel offers 93 distinct rooms in a historic setting.
