History of Slavery at Salem Maritime

What comes to mind when you think of American slavery? nJoin us Sunday, September 29th, for an interactive tour with park rangers as we explore the connections between Salem Maritime and the institution of slavery. nTogether with park rangers, visitors will examine primary source documents and learn about the lives of enslaved people living in Salem during the 18th century. We’ll explore the ties between New England merchants (like Richard & Elias Hasket Derby) and slave plantations in the West Indies. nThis event is free and no reservations are required.nThe tour will start at our park store, Waite & Peirce (193 Derby St, Salem) at 1 PM and will last approximately one hour. Visitors will be able to tour the lower floor of the Derby House afterwards, in groups of 8. nThis tour is being offered in conjunction with Essex National Heritage Area’s annual Trails & Sails event series.
